Janai Purnima at Kumbheswar Mahadev- Patan
Every year during the full moon of Shrawan (July–August), the ancient city of Patan comes alive with vibrant rituals for Janai Purnima, one of Nepal’s most significant Hindu festivals. Among the most sacred destinations is Kumbheshwar Mahadev Temple, located near Banglamukhi, where thousands of devotees gather to take part in time-honored traditions.
Janai Purnima, also called Rakhi Festival or Thread Changing Ceremony, is when Hindu men renew their Janai (sacred thread) as a symbol of purity and spiritual commitment. Priests tie the raksha bandhan thread on devotees’ wrists for protection and blessings.
Kumbheshwar Mahadev – A Spiritual Magnet
Kumbheshwar Mahadev, one of the oldest temples in Patan, is believed to date back to the Licchavi period. Legend says its holy pond is connected to the sacred waters of Gosaikunda, a revered alpine lake in the Himalayas. On Janai Purnima, devotees bathe in the pond’s icy water before performing rituals, an act believed to cleanse the body and soul.
A short walk from Kumbheshwar lies Banglamukhi Temple, dedicated to the goddess who grants victory and wisdom. On this day, devotees also visit Banglamukhi to offer prayers, light oil lamps, and seek her divine grace, making the festival a combined experience of devotion, cleansing, and spiritual renewal.
The Enchanting Jhakri Dance
One of the most captivating highlights of Janai Purnima at Kumbheshwar is the Jhakri dance. Jhakris- traditional shamans dressed in colorful attire with feathers, beads, and bells perform trance-like dances to the rhythmic beats of drums and traditional instruments. This ritual, rooted in ancient animist traditions, is believed to ward off evil spirits and heal the community. The Jhakri’s chants, movements, and energy create a powerful, almost hypnotic atmosphere, drawing both devotees and curious visitors alike.
